Swiss K31 Opinions
2 Attachment(s)
One of my weaknesses is Swiss firearms. A local gent has a Swiss K31 for sale. He's asking $300 for it (which includes some reloading dies and brass). Just curious of people's opinions on this deal (seems a bit high to me but prices seem to have gone up also). Thanks.

Re: Swiss K31 Opinions
That's a good deal for just the gun alone right now. The pictures look good.
I have never owned one but have seen a few at the range. The straight pull bolt looks pretty sweet. I am hesitant about ammo availability though. Being set up to reload is the way to go. |
Re: Swiss K31 Opinions
I'm a big fan of the K31.
I'm not sure the "straight bolt" design is really any faster than a traditional bolt, but it is easy and fast to operate. The workmanship is top-notch, like everything else Swiss. Ammo availability should not be a problem - if you reload. You can take .284 Win. brass and re-form it in 7.5x55 dies and it works just fine. Be sure to remove the steel buttplate and see if there is a soldiers personal information tag (made of mylar), about half of K31's have one. You used to be able to buy K31's for under $75, but now they are going for several hundred. Nice guns - wish I had a few! |
Re: Swiss K31 Opinions
Seems high to me. I would like a K-31 too, but 1/2 the price minus the reloading supplies would be fair dinkum to me.

Re: Swiss K31 Opinions
Straight-pull 7.5x55 Schmidt-Reubens in the hands of every capable Swiss farmer were one of the reasons Hitler didn't invade Switzerland.
Ammo availability should be the critical factor in your decision... |
Re: Swiss K31 Opinions
I'm not sure what reloading dies + brass go for, so that might be a decent deal.
But I'm gonna' slightly disagree with my friend AG Capone here. K31s with mint bores and original wood finish and metal do indeed go for $300. However, the wood appears to have been stripped with a chemical or perhaps lightly sanded. I would only consider such a rifle a shooter, as its collector value has been diminished. As stated above, ammo is an issue, too. As a shooter, I'd say it's worth $175, max. |

That and having to negotiate the Swiss Alps...

Re: Swiss K31 Opinions
Had one. My dad bought it back in the late 50s mailorder for $24.95 or $29.95 with a 4x scope re-bored to 308 caliber[7.62x51 NATO] . Shot a couple deer with it. Decide to get rid of it in the early 70s when we heard bad storys about the rechambering to .308 for a barrel bore that was actually .301-.302. They are heavy.

Re: Swiss K31 Opinions
I would have bought it already. That is a smoking deal in my part of the country for one in that good of shape.
He does not live in Washington state by chance? |
Re: Swiss K31 Opinions
So how does it shoot, Bob? : )

Re: Swiss K31 Opinions
Id pay it, the gun looks damn near perfect, not a gun to base your survival on though. The K31 is a tack driver off the scale once its dialed in and you get used to it. but ammo is expensive and sometimes hard to find. the straight pull system was designed so soldiers didnt have to expose their shoulders and arms from cover to chamber a round(try it!) compared to the Mausers and others of the period.all in all thats a nice rifle.

I agree with the posters above that the wood appears to have been refinished (stripped/sanded/restained). It probably does not justify more than a $175 price. The Swiss K31 is a wonderful firearm. they have great trigger pulls, and every piece fits together "just so." If you're looking for a K31, Empire Arms (Dennis Kroh) occasionally has them for $325+, but is currently out of stock (see http://www.empirearms.com/K31.htm ). Allan Schisel (Allan's Armory) has one in lesser condition for $175 at: http://www.allans-armory.com/aaresult.php?PageId=31 Swiss GP11 ammo is very nice stuff. I've reloaded 7.5x55 from Win .284 brass, but you no longer have to form that brass. 7.5x55 brass is available from Graf's - see: http://www.grafs.com/metallic/775 |
Re: Swiss K31 Opinions
I've got 2 of them and love them
I got mine 2 years ago for $129. I wish I would have bought a ton of them. That is about the going rate on Gunbroker. If you like it buy. I love mine |
Re: Swiss K31 Opinions
